A girl who is wrestling with the themes that can keep every teenager awake all over the world. Persepolis tells the painful and complex story of a country from within, but it also forms the idiosyncratic and often light-hearted ‘diary’ of an intelligent, lonely girl growing up in a diaspora. She grows up during the Islamic Revolution in Iran and was sent to a boarding school in Vienna for security reasons by her parents after the following coup. Both the original comic strips and the film portray the humorous, intimate and politically-critical story of nine-year-old Marjane. ![]() An animation film based on the autobiographical comic-strip books by the Iranian-born Marjane Satrapi, for which she herself wrote the screenplay and conceived the images along with cartoonist Vincent Paronnaud. ![]()
